A horrific stream of consciousness. When I write I invision myself bludgeoning the extemists of the internet with a rubber baseball bat.

the icons are practically embedded in the desktop. its similar to this great mac app Docktop: http://www.jonn8.com/docktop/

Unfortunately I've got to work with windows at my new job (theres only one freebsd machine in the place ) and i'd like to have the 5 main applications on the desktop with a similar launching application thats used above

the rest of the desktop is icon free

ObjectDock is the app you'll want. A custom background could be created to look as if it's sunk into the desktop. The icons would sit on and be launched from that background. OD has a free version, which for what you want, would be plenty. Visit WWW Linkand check it out. Oh, and if you do get OD, check out the ObjectDock Gallery for some great icons and backgrounds, or you can go to www.messiah1.wincustomize.com or www.webgizmos.wincustomize.com for some backgrounds.

yeah, ObjectDock would rock for what you are looking for.  You may find out that you like it better than Mac's dock.  Check out the weather functions of it (one of the coolest new features I have seen in a long time).
